Matt C.
Boating Expert at Boat & Sail Magazine

Matt lives full-time on his 38-foot sailboat. He travels the US east coast with his wife and their tenacious terrier, traveling with the seasons like snowbirds. In addition to being a writer, photographer, and boater, he is an FAA Airline Transport Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor. Before traveling, Matt worked in higher education as a professor of aeronautics and business. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration.

Matt has been enamored with boating and life on the water since his family moved to the fabulous Florida Keys during high school. There he spent summers scuba diving, free diving, and cruising the backcountry on a 20-foot center console. After college, he returned to the Keys and bought a 32-foot sailboat to fix up and live on. But, after teaching many invaluable lessons about the realities of project boats, the boat won. So, a decade later, Matt and his wife bought a (much nicer) Lagoon 380 sailing catamaran and took a three-year sabbatical from work and daily commutes. They traveled all over Florida, The Bahamas, the ICW, and Chesapeake Bay.

The sabbatical ended, but they decided their time on the water should not. So they downsized to a smaller monohull and began working as “digital nomads.” While they are back at work, they no longer commute and still appreciate every minute spent on the water.

Shelagh Hogan
Contributor at Boat & Sail Magazine

Shelagh Hogan grew up sailing and quickly fell in love with being on the water. She followed that passion to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy where she earned a degree in Marine Transportation. She holds a USCG 1600 ton Captain license. After several years as a navigation officer and surface rescue swimmer aboard ships in the merchant marine, she bought a 43’ sailboat that she lives and travels aboard. When she’s not writing about her travels and sailing, she is—sometimes clumsily—learning the lessons and enjoying the challenges that life on board has to teach.
