Where to buy Jetsurf Electric:
Jetsurf Electric

The creators behind Jetsurf Electric have displayed their ingenuity for open water racing with the creation of their latest model going fully electric. By keeping many of the same racing designs and features of Jetsurf’s two-stroke models, this electric surfboard ranks among the top motorized competitors in the industry.

For reference, it’s very similar in both looks and experience to the JetSurf Cruiser.

To offset the weight of the battery, Jetsurf designed the hull of their electric surfboard to be as light as possible, utilizing a hollow design and using lightweight but strong carbon fiber. With the addition of the battery unit, the total weight comes in at 31.9 kg / 72.5 pounds, below the average weight of similar electric-powered surfboards.

The Jetsurf Electric is a great powered surfboard for people who are looking to add some spice and speed to their watersport shelf. This rig gives riders a similar experience to wakeboarding, surfing, and snowboarding, at a price of $15,990 / €14,615.98.

Jetsurf, but Electric

A Machine Built for Racing

Aggressive speed and carving are addictive once you get the hang of things. Turning and carving feel super technical, and jet speed matches industry competitors with a top speed of around 34 mph. Riding the Jetsurf Electric, we experienced endless fun until the battery is spent, leaving you with thoughts of getting a spare battery soon after you’re finished riding.

Average riding time depends on a few factors, like riding mode, the weight of the rider, and how many breaks are taken, but you can expect between 25-55 minutes of ride time on a full battery. We experienced around 30-35 minutes of battery life riding almost continuously.

Since the Jetsurf Electric is focused on a racing style build with the upcurved design of the hull and lack of a flat standing platform, there is never a shortage of fun to be had when you set your feet in the wells and pull on the leash handle.

A bit different than most electric surfboards is Jetsurf’s wired handle that’s mounted to the tip of the nose of the board. This handle is your speed control, your kill switch, and gives you more control of the board on turns. Offering more stability and control for beginners to learn and for more advanced riders to lean into to even tighter turns.

Quiet Open Water Racing

Jetsurf has a long reputation as a racing brand, and they matched that same experience with their Jetsurf Electric powered surfboard without the noise. Another advantage is how much cleaner it is compared to the two-stroke alternatives that leave some fuel residue in the water.

Diving into Electric Surfing

Getting in the water to test out this sleek machine feels very similar to other Jetsurf boards but quite different from other electric surfboards on the market. The Jetsurf Electric has padded footwells, unlike the Radinn Carve and Awake Ravik 3, which have flat open platforms. The Jetsurf Electric board also has a wired hand controller attached to the board.

Getting situated on take-off can involve a learning curve, especially for larger riders since the max rider load tops out at 220 lbs. It’s doable with heavier riders, even slightly plus 220-pounders, but it’s more difficult. The payoff after learning it is pure exhilaration though.

In our experience, if you ride goofy style but are left-handed, you may have trouble finding the right speed for getting up and going since you are forced to use the hand that matches your front foot to control your speed.

But once you’re up and zooming, the fun and playful ride is abundant. Leaning close to the water in tight turns feels comfortable with holding the leash taught and secured foot placement.

To give you an idea of the elegant design and functionality Jetsurf produces for their boards, let’s walk through the unboxing and setup of the Jetsurf Electric surfboard.

Unboxing a Beauty

The Jetsurf Electric powered surfboard comes in two boxes, one for the board and its accessories and one for the battery and all of its components. A nifty included accessory for all Jetsurf boards is their surf stand, making it super easy for your board to sit on while you prepare it for the water.

You’ll also find a tool bag containing all of the necessary tools you’ll need, two wristbands with starter magnets, a screwdriver, and a padded transport bag for both the board and the battery with a set of wheels for the board bag.

After all of the pieces are out of the package, you can begin to put the pieces of the puzzle together. The first thing to do is charge the battery if it doesn’t come fully charged. Jetsurf makes charging the lithium-ion battery. It charges right in the transport case. (Just make sure to open the ventilation flaps.

While the battery is charging up, getting familiar with the layout of the board is crucial to help you better understand regular maintenance and care. The board has three fins, two small fast-fitting FCS click-on and-off fins on the sides, and one larger fin that requires four screws.

Understanding the Board Anatomy

On the top side of the board, in the center, you’ll find two compartments, one large one for the battery and attached front footwell and a smaller one located just behind that houses the engine compartment and ventilation chamber.

It’s important to make sure this dual compartment is securely shut and dry before entering the water to avoid unwanted condensation in the engine.

Near the nose of the hull is where the wired handle and leash attach to the board. This leash and wire can be adjusted to the rider’s height before riding so that you can have the best handling experience.

The handle is where you control the board’s speed, where the wristband starter magnet attaches to turn the jet on, and is also the kill switch when you fall off the board.

The wristband starter magnet also serves another purpose, to select the ride mode. The Jetsurf Electric has three ride modes, green for low speed, yellow for medium speed, and red for full speed, which are indicated by a light located in between the foot wells on the left side of the board.

To select the mode you want, just touch one of the wristband starter magnets to the indicator light located on the left side of the board between the padded foot wells and hold it there until your desired ride mode light appears.

Safety is in the Key

Jetsurf made safety intuitive when designing its Electric surfboard.

For safety and peace of mind, the Jetsurf Electric 3 kWh Lithium-ion battery has a battery monitoring system that checks temperature fluctuation. And to avoid overheating, the Jetsurf Electric is partly water-cooled.

The battery is easily attached to the board by setting it into its compartment and snapping the four closures down to secure it in place. Greeting you with a lovely “I’m ready!” sound as soon as it’s locked and loaded.

To keep you safe from being stranded too far from shore, the indicator light on the board lets you know how much battery you have left while you’re riding. When the red light comes on, the battery enters safe mode, which gives you a few minutes to basically idle back to shore.

This provides less specific information than other electric surfboards. The Ravik 3 shows 10 bars of power, for example, compared to what amounts to 3 bars on Jetsurf’s electric. And you have to look down while standing or when you’re in the water to see the color.

Inside the engine compartment, there is also a ventilation chamber that keeps the engine free of any condensation with GORE-TEX technology and water decompression.

There’s a smart charger safety system that constantly monitors the health (ie. temperature) of the battery.

The three ride modes also offer riders safety by limiting how fast they can go. The low-speed mode (green) limits your thrust to 30% so that little ones can take a ride with the Jetsurf Tube.

Although it runs almost a grand, it could be worth it to include other people. The Tube will help less agile riders, kids and beginners.

Jetsurf Electric Maintenance

After you’re finished tearing around on the water, there are a few things that need to be addressed before storing the board until the next time you can get out on the water, like most mechanical water toys.

Spray it Off

The entire board needs to be thoroughly rinsed off after each use, especially after ocean rides, to remove any sand, salt, or other debris. Simply use a garden hose or a portable camping shower.

After you have given it a quick shower, it’s safe to take out the battery. Likely there is some water and other debris underneath the battery unit. This will need to be rinsed out as well but don’t forget to cover the battery connection with the provided cap before you rinse the battery compartment.

The engine’s cooling system and jet also need to be rinsed and drained to prevent any rusting and clogging to occur within the system. Jetsurf provides an attachment for the cooling system to connect a hose for a quick rinse easily. The jet just needs a quick rinse and to be tipped back to drain out any leftover sand.

Inspect the Battery Compartment

The Jetsurf Electric is a bit different from most electric surfboards as its engine compartment isn’t hermetically sealed. Like the gas-powered models, water will run through without causing damage. That makes it important to rinse the chamber with fresh water when done, especially after riding in the ocean.

The compartment has two lids, one that’s held in place by magnets and an inner lid that is secured with screws. After both lids are removed, it’s essential to open both compartment caps to ensure there is no water within them.

Once you have completed all the necessary maintenance, it just needs a quick wipe down with a towel and a battery charge, and the Jetsurf Electric is ready for another ride!

How Does it Compare?

Jetsurf Electric brings a whole new experience to the electric surfboard market. That being said, there are positives and negatives to explore compared to industry competitors.

Next to a board like the Radinn Carve, you can expect a similar riding experience when the optional foot straps are installed. But without the added wired hand controller on the Jetsurf Electric, carving tight turns is a bit more difficult. On the other hand, having your hands free with a wireless remote provides other benefits and a different riding feel. The Radinn Carve has a smaller price point that may be more attractive to most people in the market compared to the Jetsurf Electric.

Compared to a high-performance board like the Awake Ravik 3 that feels almost like a wakeboard in the water and has a large jet engine, the Jetsurf Electric gives the same playful experience with a more aggressive, racy style. Both boards have foot strap capabilities, but the Awake Ravik has the advantage of a wireless remote and a slightly more affordable price tag.

Is it Worth it?

It’s an awesome adrenaline rush on a personal watercraft that’s arguably more fun than a jet ski. Its cost is similar, but the experience can be more exhilarating without the transport and storage challenges.

The JetSurf Electric is a speed machine that’ll have you jumping, carving, and pressing the limits of electric surfing. And with a price of $15,990 / €14,615.98, it is a bit steeper of a cost, but the fun to be had on this board is invaluable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who is the Jetsurf Electric For?

The Jetsurf Electric is a great board for people who love getting out on the water, shredding turns, and having a blast doing it. There are limitations for taller or heavier riders, with a max load capacity of 100 kg / 220 lbs; riders that are around that weight will have a significantly more difficult time riding this surfboard.

Also, this machine requires more attention to keep it in working order compared to other electric surfboards, making it ideal for single owners or yachters.

Is it easy to learn to ride?

The Jetsurf Electric is designed for people who are familiar with similar watersports, like surfing and wakeboarding. There is a bit of a learning curve to riding, especially for taller or larger riders, as it can be difficult to get your feet in place while holding a steady speed and holding onto the wired handle.

That being said, Jetsurf supplies you with a Jetsurf Tube that can be attached around the board to make learning easy!

How long does the battery last per ride?

The Jetsurf Electric’s 3 kWh lithium-ion battery can provide a ride lasting from 25 – 55 minutes, depending on the weight of the rider, power level, and how you ride with the board.

Is the Jetsurf Electric loud?

One of the biggest differences between Jetsurf Electric and Jetsurf’s other model surfboards is the lack of noise. The electric motor is significantly less noisy than gas-powered engines and similar in sound to other electric surfboards.
