The TEMO 450 is a radically different electric outboard than anything else out there. But its design makes perfect sense, especially for a very specific group of boat owners.
Unlike other outboards, this one is designed not to replace a gas engine but to replace a sculling oar. It’s shaped like an oar with a propeller mounted on the end, and it mounts in a simple oar lock on the transom. When not in use, the one-piece design can be stowed easily. The shaft extends to make its total length between 51 and 70 inches (130 and 170 cm). The TEMO 450 has a trigger that works as a throttle and a simple ahead/astern controller.
For anyone with a rowing or sailing dinghy who wants an extremely low-profile motor for getting in and out of the marina, the TEMO makes a ton of sense. TEMO also makes a more “traditional” looking electric outboard in the TEMO 1000 for larger boats.
Things we like:
-
Small and light design is practical for rowboats
-
Prop cage protects it from damage
-
Simple, one-piece design seems robust
Things we don't like:
-
Very little propulsive power
-
Small battery, short range
