Mild rapids, Good Tracking
Where to buy Aqua Marina Steam 412:
Aqua Marina Steam 412 Product

Aqua Marina offers quite a few different inflatable kayaks in different ranges for different kinds of paddlers. The Steam 412 is an example of a mid-range tandem kayak with versatility and a quality that presents an appealing boat for intermediate paddlers as well as beginners with the ambition to grow their skillset.

With a PVC material that’s more robust than vinyl and railings of a certain proportion, the Steam 412 is rated for some mild white water rafting. Specifically, it’s a Class 3 certification intended for intermediate kayakers able to cope with mild rapids and moderate-sized waves.

There’s a lot to be positive about this tandem kayak in terms of performance, with only a few strange drawbacks.

As the images illustrate below, all the features and the design profile make for a boat that can do a lot and probably survive for a long time. It will likely do so while keeping beginners and intermediates interested in long sessions for years.

The double fins, the storage space and the seats are a few notable features that make tracking over distance straighter and more comfortable. The placement of the D-rings and the footrest are countervailing negatives that aren’t immediately apparent.

All in all, this is an inflatable tandem kayak worth looking at for performance, portability and for a range of different kinds of paddling experiences.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Side View

There are a number of features that help the Steam 412 stand out from other tandem inflatable kayaks. Firstly the detachable drop-stitch floor enables you to dry out the boat so much easier after use than most inflatable kayaks. We haven’t seen this feature on many of the inflatables we’ve tested, and it isn’t until you’ve paddled a few strokes that this feature shows its worth.

Features

  • High-frequency welded seams for solid bonding strength
  • V-cone protection on bow and stern to protect from collisions
  • Two center fins provide superior tracking and performance
  • Adjustable cargo bungees provide additional deck storage
  • Molded rubber handles at bow, stern and center for easy transportation
  • High-backed EVA cushioned adjustable fabric seats
  • Deckshield protects front paddler and bow storage from direct splashes

The one thing to watch with the detachable floor is to properly insert it before inflating. We’ll admit that even with the clearly stated directional arrows, we messed this up on our first go. The other catch is that the D-rings are a little too close to the floor, which makes it slightly challenging to attach the clips of the chair adjustment straps and other gear.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Features

The Steam 412 also comes with two detachable high-backed EVA cushioned fabric chairs that are easy to adjust and have ample storage, plus two relatively easy-to-adjust footrests. The bonus accessory is a 10L dry sack with a carry strap, which you can attach under the bungees on the back deck of the kayak.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Sack

The Steam 412 also comes with a hand pump, which is convenient and something we believe all inflatables should include, which makes it quick and easy to set up. This kayak is great for families wanting to get out on the lake, folks looking for a light-touring inflatable kayak, and adventure seekers who want to try out some mild whitewater river paddling.

Steam down rivers with Aqua Marina

The Aqua Marina Steam 412 is a versatile inflatable double kayak built for superior tracking on flat water and performance and maneuverability on whitewater.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Steam Down

The Steam 412 can be enjoyed by families and your favorite K9 on the local lake and by adventure seekers looking for greater action down a mild river run.

The versatility of the Steam 412 is one of its greatest selling points, as it’s an inflatable kayak the entire family can use with the quality of construction to last many seasons of heavy use.

A Quality Build

The Aqua Marina Steam 412 is made from reinforced PVC high-frequency welded air chambers and a high-density drop-stitch floor with excellent rigidity and longevity. The quality of construction and materials provide greater performance than less expensive inflatable kayaks like the Aqua Marina Betta 412, which has an inflatable I-beam floor and is solely designed as a recreational kayak for flatwater paddling.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Quality

The advantage of the drop-stitch floor allows for excellent stability because it’s made to be as rigid as a paddleboard which you can stand up on. The only difference is that a paddleboard averages around 5” in thickness, while the floor of the Steam 412 is 2.8”. But they’re both as rigid.

The side air chambers are also made with reinforced PVC, which adds protection against punctures and rigidity too. The air chambers of the Aqua Marina Steam and Betta 412 are actually quite similar in their construction. They can withstand heavy use but aren’t quite as robust as the Razor Kayak R2, made from 1000 denier PVC, which is the same material commercial river rafts are made from.

The drop-stitch floor of the Steam 312 and the Tech-Stitch™ floor of the R2 are comparable in rigidity, the biggest difference is the Steam’s floor is removable, which gives you the advantage of being able to clean and dry your kayak more effectively.

Setting Up the Steam 412

The setup of the Aqua Marina Steam 412 is incredibly quick and easy, assuming you put the flooring in the correct way from the beginning. The way to tell this is the white arrows on the floor should be facing the bow of the kayak. In the photo below the arrows are facing the kayak’s stern with the bungee straps on the back deck.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Setting Up
Pre-inflation of the Steam 412 with the floor facing the wrong way

You also need to ensure the floor is correctly lined up with the recesses for the drainage valves. PVC does not slide easily, so you need to lift and place the floor into position. Although it is convenient to have a removable floor when cleaning and drying the kayak, it adds a layer of complexity when setting up the Steam 412.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Setting
Pre-inflation of the Steam 412 with the floor facing the wrong way

Inflating the Aqua Marina Steam 412 was incredibly easy because the PSI of the side chambers is only 1.45, the same as the Betta 412. In the beginning, we thought we read this wrong, as the recessed values and durable material of the Steam should be able to take a much higher PSI. Compared to the Razor Kayak R2, which requires a PSI of 7 or 8 for its air chambers, the 1.45 PSI of the Steam seems very low.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Psi

The PSI of the floor of the Steam is 4.35, which is still well below that of the R2’s 7-8, and is even less than ultralight touring kayaks like the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110, which has a drop-stitch floor and a recommendation of 6 PSI. The biggest issue with this lower PSI is that the Steam has the potential to lose air more quickly as there is less air in the chambers.

Some might suspect that the seams may not be as strong which could affect the rigidity of the craft. After testing, albeit only a few times, we never experienced any loss of air pressure at any time.

The lower PSI also means the single chamber pump is sufficient to inflate the boat without having a heart attack.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Psi Steam

The EVA cushioned high-back chairs are very simple to install and attach to the Velcro strips on the bottom of the kayak, much like the Aquaglide Cirrus 110. We like this feature because it stops the seats from sliding around when you’re carrying the boat like the seats in the R2 do.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 High Back Chairs
EVA cushioned seat attached with the webbing straps on the incorrect D-rings

When attaching the webbing straps to the D-rings, ensure the top webbing straps are attached to the D-rings in front of the paddler and the lower straps and attached behind the paddler. We had these in the reverse order until we hit the water and realized something was wrong.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Webbing

The biggest design floor we noticed with the Steam is that the D-rings sit too low in the cockpit, so when the floor is inflated, it’s difficult to fully extend the D-rings out from the side air chambers. This makes attaching the clips of the chair and any other gear to the D-rings quite difficult.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 D Rings

The footrests came already installed to the floor of the Steam 412. There are only two possible length adjustments for the footrest which slide out relatively easily from the webbing straps on the floor.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Footrest

A Solid, Stable Inflatable

At 35” wide, the Aqua Marina Steam 412 is an incredibly stable craft. Add the two center fins to the hull of the kayak and this inflatable is rock solid. Compared to the Aqua Marina Betta 412, the Steam is a full 4” wider. The Steam is also wider than the Razor Kayak R2, which is 33” wide.

The double fin also provides superior stability compared to the R2, which only has a single fin at the stem of the boat. The stability of the Steam makes it an excellent kayak to paddle with your family and pets, while the superior tracking also makes it an excellent choice for touring paddlers looking to go the distance.

The Steam 412 also has better stability compared to the Aqua Marina Betta 412 because the inflated seats of the Betta sit very high in the boat. The advantage of the EVA cushioned fabric seats of the Steam 412 is they sit a lot flatter, lowering your center of gravity and creating more stability.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Two Kayaks

The fabric seat of the R2 is actually thinner than the Steam 412, but it’s so marginal we didn’t notice it affecting the stability of the boats when paddling both kayaks.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Three Kayaks

Performance

The performance of the Aqua Marina Steam 412 is impressive for an inflatable kayak. The double fin and rigid construction create superior tracking, and the V-shaped bow cuts seamlessly through the water.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Performance

The tracking of the Steam 412 is comparable to the Razor Kayak R2. Although the R2 only has a single fin, it has a narrower hull with a hard chine that cuts through the water more aggressively. The wider, flatter hull of the Steam doesn’t track as well, but the second fin gives it an advantage, so with both fins on the Steam, the tracking of these two crafts is arguably the same.

The narrower shape of the R2’s hull means the side tubes also sit slightly above the water compared to the Steam, which reduces drag and improves speed. This means the R2 might be slighter faster on the water than the Steam, but you would need to have paddlers of equal skill in both these boats to test this theory. Our guess is that the R2 might be fractionally faster than the Steam because of its hull design and because it’s also fractionally longer by 5”.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Faster

Regarding maneuverability, the Steam 412 is agile enough to make efficient turns, which is especially important when paddling down rivers. Paddling with the two fins will reduce the kayak’s turning capabilities, so if you’re navigating tight turns and paddling in areas where tracking performance is less of a priority, you could remove the fin closest to the bow and paddle with the rear fin only.

If you’re paddling down complex whitewater, you’re likely to remove both fins as the depth of the water on swift moving rivers can change abruptly. But if you’re paddling on flatwater and won’t risk getting the fin caught in shallow water, the performance will vastly improve by having one or two of the fins attached.

Drainage

The drainage on the Aqua Marina Steam 412 has been designed with flatwater and whitewater paddling in mind. The Steam has more self-bailing drainage holes than most inflatable kayaks we’ve tested (16), and this is because it’s designed to be paddled in whitewater with the assumption that you’ll be taking in large amounts of water that need to drain out.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Drainage

These 16 self-bailing drainage valves are not designed to be used on flat water. The moment you open these valves, water will begin to enter the cockpit of the kayak. Paddling with these valves open won’t sink the kayak, but it means you’ll be sitting in water while you paddle, which isn’t desirable if you’re paddling on a lake and otherwise dry.

The drainage hole at the stern on the Steam 412 is similar to the valve on Aqua Marina’s Betta 412. We found that both of these kayaks suffer from the same issue with drainage. If you tip the kayak vertically to drain out the water, the water that doesn’t escape through the valve on the first tip will collect in the stern of the boat and you would need to repeat this process multiple times.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Self Bailing

Draining water from a kayak will always be easier with two people holding either end of the boat so you can easily tip it back and forth. But if you’re on your own, this valve provides a challenge. We much prefer the draining valve on the Razor Kayak R2, which is located on the V-cone protection of the stern so that all the water will eventually drain out, proving you hold it up vertically for long enough.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Draining

We also believe the screw cap valve of the R2 is much more secure than the plug-style values on the Aqua Marina Steam and Betta. The biggest difference between the Steam and the R2 regarding drainage, however, is the 16 self-bailing drainage holes on the Steam.

The R2 has the construction strength for whitewater but not the self-bailing drainage system the Steam has. This means if you’re looking to do a lot of whitewater paddling, the Steam would be the better choice, even though the R2 would withstand a lot more rough and tumble.

Weight Capacity

The weight capacity of the Aqua Marina Steam 412 is 396 lbs, which is the same as the Aqua Marina Betta 412. We were surprised the max payload is the same for both of these kayaks, given that the Steam 412 has a sturdier drop-stitch floor than the Betta’s inflatable I-beam structure and because the Steam weighs eight pounds more than the Betta.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Weight Capacity

In regards to comparisons, what surprised us even more is that the Razor Kayak R2 has a weight capacity of 635 lbs, which is almost 240 lbs more than the Steam and Betta 412. Given the R2 is a lot heavier than the Steam, even though on paper it’s said to be lighter, this does make some sense.

The huge difference in weight capacity must have to do with the high quality 1000 denier PVC the R2 is made from, which allows for a much higher PSI. The Tech-Stitch™ floor must also contribute to the additional weight bearing of the R2 compared to the Steam 412.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Difference

Given that the max payload of the Steam and Betta 412 are said to be the same, we’re inclined to question the accuracy of this number. In reality, we believe the weight capacity of the Steam is a lot higher, given the quality of the construction of both the drop-stitch floor and reinforced PVC body of the kayak.

(At some time in the future, we’ll test and compare capacity and update these guides.)

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Capacity

At around 396 lbs, if you have two fully grown adults close to 6 feet tall paddling, you would get very close to max capacity. But given how low the air pressure of the Steam is compared to the R2, perhaps there is legitimacy to this lower weight bearing.

We would recommend that if you’re planning to haul a lot of heavy gear and two fully grown adults over longer distances, you may want to consider the R2 over the Steam. But if you’re mostly planning on paddling the Steam in whitewater without much gear, or using it for lighter overnight paddles, the ~396 lbs weight capacity should be sufficient.

Kayak Profile: Boat Length

The length of the Steam 412 is 13’6”, which is a decent length for an inflatable 2-person kayak. Most inflatable double kayaks we’ve paddled range from 10’ like the Driftsun 2-Person, to 16’ like the Aquaglide Blackfoot 160. Typically the cheaper recreational kayaks will be on the shorter side, while the more advanced touring or fishing kayaks like the Blackfoot will be a little longer.

The Steam 412 sits in the middle, with enough legroom for two adults and sufficient space for gear for an overnight paddle. The additional length helps with tracking and speed, but at 13’6”, the Steam is still very maneuverable, which is what you want when paddling in whitewater.

Because this kayak is a hybrid, we believe Aqua Marina has found the perfect length for this kayak’s flatwater and whitewater capabilities. The Steam also has a similar length to the Razor Kayak R2, which is only slightly longer at 14’1”.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Boat Length

Deck and Storage

Because the Aqua Marina Steam 412 is a hybrid touring and whitewater inflatable kayak, it has deck bungees on the stern of the kayak but not on the deck of the bow. We believe it has been designed this way to ensure greater maneuverability in moving water while providing extra storage capacity in addition to the front and rear storage areas.

The Steam 412 has additional D-rings in the bow and stern to attach gear to, which is a feature we love in inflatable touring kayaks that have an open cockpit. The space under the splash guards is limited, however, and depending on the leg length of the rear paddler and how reclined they sit, there might be very little space behind the rear paddler to store gear.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Deck

There should be enough space to store 10L of gear under the front and rear splash guard of the Steam 412, plus enough space for the 10L drybag on the back deck, which gives you approximately 30L of storage if you pack well. Compared to a hardshell kayak this is very little. But in comparison to most double inflatable kayaks we’ve paddled, the storage space is on par.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Storage

One thing to be aware of with the storage area under the front and rear splash guard is any items stored beyond the attachable floor will likely be sitting in any water that drains off the drop-stitch floor into the base of the cockpit.

Carrying the Kayak

The rubber carry handles of the Aqua Marina Steam 412 are the same as the Betta 412. These rubber handles are comfortable to grip, non-slip, and won’t cut into your hand, even when carrying heavier loads.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Handles

What we love most about the carry handles on the Steam 412 are the handles in the center of the kayak in addition to the handles on the bow and stern. The only glitch with the center handles is that we found the position of the front seat actually gets in the way of the handles, which doesn’t prevent you from using them, but makes it harder to access them cleanly.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Front Seat

The center carry handles is where the Steam 412 has a real advantage over the Razor Kayak R2. It’s very hard for one person to carry a two-person kayak without center handles, so we love the fact Aqua Marina has accounted for this.

Backpack and Storage Bag

The backpack storage bag of the Aqua Marina Steam 412 is one of the best designed and highest quality made storage bags we’ve seen. It has a full-length zipper which makes storing and accessing the deflated kayak from the bag extremely easy. There is also plenty of room inside the bag which means you don’t have to wrestle and try to squeeze the rolled up kayak into the bag as you do with the Razor Kayak R2.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Bag

The storage bag of the Steam 412 has the option of a carry handle, shoulder strap, and backpack straps which makes the bag very versatile. It also comes with an adjustable sternum strap that helps to hold the backpack in position on your shoulders when you’re carrying a lot of weight.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Backpack

Additionally, the storage bag of the Steam 412 comes with a mesh side pocket that can easily store the pump or your collapsible paddles. There’s also plenty of space inside the bag to store additional gear.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Flat Lay

The other cool accessory of the Steam 412 is the 10L drybag that comes with the kayak. The drybag has a shoulder strap, so you can use it as a mini backpack that you can strap to the rear bungees of the kayak for easy access.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Mini

Some of the Best Kayak Seats

The high-backed EVA cushioned seats of the Aqua Marina Steam 412 are incredibly lightweight and comfortable. The bottom of the seat attaches to the Velcro strips on the floor of the kayak, which provides added stability and means the chairs won’t move around when you’re carrying the kayak to and from the water.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Kayak Seats

The adjustable webbing straps on the upper and lower sides of the chair also clip into the D-rings on both the side air chamber and floor, making for a very solid attachment and adjustable seat position.

What we also love about the Steam’s seats are the two drink bottle holders and Velcro pocket on the back of the seat. This is the advantage fabric seats have over inflatable seats like on the Aqua Marina Betta 412 or the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110. The drink bottle holders are a nifty feature that Razor kayaks don’t have on on their R2 fabric seats. The seats on the R2 also don’t attach to the floor of the kayak, which means they slide around when you’re carrying the kayak.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Back Seat

The only complaint we have about the position of the front seat, as mentioned above, is that the center carry handles are slightly covered by the chair, making it a little awkward to access them. You can shift the position of the front seat slightly forward to avoid this, but it’s challenging if the front paddler has long legs, as the footrest might then be too close.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Center Carry

Footrest

The simple design of the Steam 412’s footrest is super easy to attach and detach to the floor of the kayak. We like the fact that you can easily slide the plastic bar of the footrest into the webbing straps to adjust the position, but the biggest issue is there are only two varying positions you can choose from, which doesn’t cater to a variety of leg lengths.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Foot Rest

Aqua Marina’s Tomahawk Air-K 375 and the Betta 412 both have a footrest design that is attached to straps that thread through the D-ring of the chair and allow specific adjustability of the strap length. There are advantages and disadvantages to this design.

Firstly, the strap system means the footrest isn’t secured into position, so it moves around when you’re carrying it and when your feet are not pushing against it.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Strap System
Footrest of the Aqua Marina Tomahawk Air-K 375.

The other disadvantage of the strap system is you need to feed the straps through the D-ring and then back through the buckle, which is a little more complicated than simply sliding the footrest in and out of the webbing attachments on the floor. The lack of adjustability, however, is the compromise on the Steam 412.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Adjustability

The Double Fin System

The double fin system on the Aqua Marina Steam 412 provides superior tracking and stability. We love the fact you can decide whether you want to paddle without the fins if you’re in shallow water, one fin if the conditions are relatively still, or two fins in windier conditions.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Double Fin

The fins are designed with a curved front to avoid weeds and debris attaching to them and creating drag. They are also made from hard plastic that is slightly flexible and can withstand some light scrapes and scuffs.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Fin

What we don’t love about these fins is how hard they are to slide into position. They can slide into the grooves on the hull about halfway, easy enough, but then require some real strength to slide in entirely and then slide out again. You must ensure they are slid the entire way into position to lock them into place.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Fins

Keeping the Kayak Clean and Primed

The Aqua Marina Steam 412 comes with a maintenance and repair kit, including a wrench to tighten the three recessed high-pressure valves, and two sheets of PVC in black and light blue to patch any areas on the air chambers that might have a puncture.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Repair Kit

If the Steam 412 begins to lose air, tighten the three valves ever so slightly to ensure this is not where the air is escaping before you look for a puncture. When we first tested the Razor Kayak R2, one of the valves was loose. So it’s good to be aware of this, especially before the first use.

We also recommend inflating your kayak the night before and checking the air pressure the next morning to see if any air has escaped. This is especially important if you’re heading out on an overnight or multi-day trip.

It is natural for the air pressure to change or for a small amount of air to escape over time if you leave your kayak inflated. But your kayak shouldn’t lose air within a 12-hour period, especially if it’s not being used.

Bringing a pump, perhaps a smaller one than the included unit from Aqua Marina along with the repair kit is worth considering too.

We also recommend you don’t store or leave your inflatable in direct sunlight for a long period of time when not in use. UV rays will cause damage to the PVC over time and the air pressure of the kayak will increase in the heat, which can cause pressure on the seams.

Do we recommend it?

The Aqua Marina Steam 412 is a hybrid inflatable kayak designed for light touring and easy whitewater paddling. The kayak’s versatility makes it an excellent choice for families with kids of various ages and skill levels and for adventurers who like to chill out on the lake and get their heart rate up on a moving river.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Recommend

The Steam 412 is lightweight for a double inflatable that has the capabilities of being paddled in a variety of conditions. The lower PSI of the side chambers compared to the Razor Kayak R2 makes us question the strength of the overall construction. But the lighter weight difference of the Steam compared to the R2 and the center carry handles make it a much easier kayak to transport and move around off the water.

There are some basic features like the high quality backpack storage bag and the additional 10L dry sack that put a big smile on our face. We also love the stability and comfort of the EVA cushioned seats, the easy installment of the footrests, and the speed at which you can set up this kayak.

The removable floor is both a blessing and a curse, making it so much easier to clean and dry the kayak but a little more annoying to set up. The double fin makes for smoother tracking especially in windier conditions, but the fins are also a little difficult to slide into position.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Bottom

Overall we believe Aqua Marina has found a good balance between performance, packability and weight, durability, and functionality with the Steam 412. Its versatility is its greatest selling point, but it’s also a beautiful inflatable kayak to paddle, that should stand many seasons of heavy use.

The Steam 412 and the Razor Kayak R2 come in at around the same price of approximately USD $1199.99. Where the R2 leads the charge on construction and robustness, the Steam 412 wins out on features, weight, and ease of transportation and use.

Aqua Marina Steam 412 Packability

We would recommend the Aqua Marina Steam 412 for anyone looking to take their inflatable kayak on moving water up to a maximum of class 3 whitewater, but who also want a craft they can go cruising on an overnight adventure in on flatwater.
