Gone are the days when SUPs were just for fitness enthusiasts and yoga practitioners. Today’s motorized paddle boards are equally at home as a yacht tender for short hops to shore, a fishing platform for accessing those hard-to-reach spots, or the perfect companion for lakehouse life where convenience meets adventure. They also provide a measure of safety when currents get rough or as a way of pushing several passengers along on larger stand up paddle boards. Read about the best options we’ve tested and reviewed for comparison here.

All the Electric Paddle Boards We've tested

This is a review of the Bixpy K-1 Outboard Kit, which we tested on a paddle board in stand-up form and in kayak mode. It’s not a game-changer for electric paddle boards as much as it is an example of expanding on the success of a great platform.
The K-1 does everything that the earlier J-2 motor did. The newest Bixpy motor just does it smaller and better.
With 33 pounds of thrust or about 1 horsepower, this compact electric motor won’t beat outboard motors on speed. The value of this is in portability, runtime and it’s pleasant yet easy operational experience in more ways than one.
Great wireless control, hours of runtime and versatility–detailed below using videos from our test sessions–make the K-2 a pretty good prospect for kayak fishers, SUP tourers (yes, we know it’s cheating a bit), and for a lake house or yacht looking to spend casual time enjoying a day.
Things we like:
-
The battery life is impressive. We got about 80 minutes at top speed and much longer at slower speeds.
-
It's super light. The whole setup, including the battery and motor, weighs just 10 pounds.
-
The quick-release motor is a breeze to remove with only one bolt.
-
We loved the warp speed feature. A double click gets you to max speed fast.
-
The wireless remote control is handy. It offers 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds.
-
Reverse options come in handy for tight maneuvering
Things we don't like:
-
$1000+ isn’t for casual SUPpers and kayakers.
-
It's not as powerful as some might expect.
-
A very slight pull to the right when mounted on the fin box

The ASIWO U1 motor is another 2-in-1 option with some stand-out design features that play out positively on a stand-up paddle board.
There’s the initial smart carrying case that lays the foundation for a positive experience that continues from setup to performance on the water.
A comparison of the U1–strictly as a SUP motor–with the closest competitors reveals some cool modular elements seen in a couple other systems as well as a couple of unique steering designs.
At $699 (Kickstarter price as of August 10th, 2024), it’s half the price of the Bixpy but includes all the adaptors needed for any paddle board fin box.

The Sipa electric paddle board was one of the first serious motorized SUPs on the market. We’ve tested their 12-foot Tourer Drive – a motorized touring SUP board, designed for coastal waters and rivers.
It includes an electric drive motor that doubles as an automatic pump, completing a board that offers convenience to the paddler. It includes three gears of speed.
The board comes with a remote control that fits over the paddle and controls the speed of the e-drive. The remote can be used to control the pump too, but a pretty straightforward app does a good job guiding newbies through the inflation process.

Where to buy Bixpy Jet J-2 SUP Motor Kit:

The Bixpy J-2 motor is a conversion kit that can be attached to kayaks, inflatable boats as well as paddle boards. With a Bixpy jet attached into the central fin box, and the battery powering it firmly attached under the aft bungee cords, it’s possible to cruise at 5-6 mph depending on wind and currents.
One notable feature that the Bixpy motor set has is the ability to go in reverse. On a paddle board, this has the noticeable effect of also turning the SUP slightly toward the left. When you know this, it results in better maneuvering in tight places like narrow rivers or canals.
The overall experience with the Bixpy jet on a paddle board is positive. The battery lasts a whole day essentially, and the jet motor itself is pretty lightweight, making it not too difficult to launch. Plugging in the battery after the SUP is in the water is also pretty safe and secure. Overall, a well-thought-out design that translates into a good paddle assist system.

Paddle Board Motor BUYING GUIDE
A SUP motor can assist you when currents and winds kick up. These models of electric SUPs might also appeal to tandem paddle boarding tours and fishing expeditions.
Once you have decided on whether you prefer an electric or non-motorized paddle board there are many other factors to take into consideration when purchasing a paddle board.
Type
The first consideration is storage, how much space do you have to store a paddle board?
The answer to this question might determine whether you are looking for a solid SUP or an inflatable SUP. Inflatable paddle boards are an excellent choice if you are looking for a paddle board that folds small and is easily transportable.
If speed is the desired fun-factor, then electric surfboards or efoils are worth checking out.
Dimensions
After deciding whether you require an inflatable or solid SUP, you will want to look at size, width, and length. These three factors determine the stability and tracking of the board when on the water. Wider and shorter boards will be more stable, whilst narrower and longer boards will track faster. Narrow and short boards will be easy to maneuver and learn turns and tricks.
Depending on your level you will want to choose accordingly. As well as the 3 size factors you will also need to consider the weight capacity of the board, this is how much weight the board can support, if you are looking for a board that is for one person or if you want to be able to bring family, or even a dog, on your board you will want a higher weight capacity.
Speed and Battery
Finally, when purchasing a motorized paddle board you will want to consider the speed, battery life, and battery charging time. Depending on your activities you may prefer a faster or slower board, with varying speeds and engine power. We have done the work for you, below you can find our selection of the best motorized paddle boards.
It’s probably a good idea to consider a VHF 2-way radio when heading out on a longer journey. Remember a PFD too.

The top speed of a motorized paddle board will be around 10mph. Most will be much less, working mainly as a motor assist, rather than as an electric surfboard, which cruises at much higher speeds in order to plane.
