Versatile Budget iSUP
Where to buy TIGERXBANG Defender Pro 10’6″ iSUP:
Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Product

TIGERXBANG is a new iSUP company with a new Defender Pro series worth looking at for a reasonably priced iSUP with great versatility.

The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro 10’6” iSUP has a classic wide and rounded shape equipped with both a kayak seat attachment and a kayak paddle attachment. So this iSUP is so versatile that it even doubles as a fully functional kayak.

This board has great rigidity and glide, thanks to a very user-friendly detachable three-fin system. This glide, with solid tracking, makes it an easy-to-paddle kayak, and solid beginner or intermediate board.

The Defender Pro from TIGERXBANG has a lot going for it, but it also has a few drawbacks. Still, at less than $500, this board delivers a lot of fun and possibility for the price.

First Impressions Of TIGERXBANG’s Defender Pro iSUP

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Accessories

When unpacking the TIGERXBANG Defender Pro you immediately notice the military-grade material. This PVC is definitely durable, even though the board is only 18 pounds. The board itself has a pleasant and round design. Even before it is inflated it looks like a sturdy design and is clearly meant as a hybrid board that can work in various situations.

The bungees seem a little loose, and not as strong as other boards tested, but the included daisy chain storage is always a plus.

Another feature that is a pleasant surprise right away is the three different carrying handles. The handles look soft and easy to grip and are strategically placed at the nose, tail, and center of the board.

The one-click triple fin system also feels sturdy, and upon initial testing, it is clear this design is user-friendly and reliable. The three-piece paddle with the fourth-piece kayak paddle attachment is easy to lock in. Once locked, it feels sturdy, is easy to adjust, and feels rather light. The paddle angle is a little altered from a typical SUP paddle, most likely to make it work as a kayak hybrid paddle. The carrying pack has plenty of room to fit everything, even the kayak seat and the manual pump. All in all, after an initial inspection, the TIGERXBANG Defender Pro looks very promising when it is fresh out of the box.

Thoughts On The Defender’s Shape, Materials, And Design

2/2

The materials, design, and shape of this TIGERKBANG board all help contribute to its performance on the water, which is why it is important to look at these aspects a bit further. TIGERXBANG uses what they say are “military-grade materials” on their boards to promote durability and strength.

The PVC material on this Defender Pro 10’6” does indeed have a durable feel. Once it is inflated there is a clear strength and rigidity to it that is often missing in cheaper boards. The quick-lock triple fin technology is also well-designed, and a clear improvement from previous models. The interlocking fin system is intuitive, and easy to use while inserting and removing. This makes setup time all the much quicker.

The silhouette of the board is a classic shape. It has a rounded nose and is 32” wide. It is very much a safe design, meant to appeal to all sorts of paddling enthusiasts. It is wide enough to allow plenty of balance for beginners and enough space for SUP yoga. Still, it is narrow enough with enough of a point to allow for a little speed and decent glide on the water.

The 10’6” should also work for most paddlers, unless you are shopping for a youth, or an exceptionally tall individual. This size also works well for a kayak, and the 6” thickness ensures the board always stays a few inches above the water. This buoyancy becomes critical when you are seated on the board while using it as a kayak. But in order to make sure these specifications perform properly, you need to take this board out on the water and see it in action.

How The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro Performs On The Water

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Performs
Paddling on calm waters with the TIGERXBAND Defender Pro

Overall, the TIGERXBANG Defender Pro performs well on the water. Upon testing in various water and weather conditions, it is indeed a versatile iSUP. Another significant and positive feature of this board is that it functions well as a kayak. But to understand whether or not this hybrid iSUP is the right board for your needs, you need to know how it glides and tracks, as well as how stable and rigid it is in various water conditions.

Glide And Tracking

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Paddling
The Defender Pro has solid tracking and glide as an iSUP and kayak

One surprise when taking the TIGERXBAND Defender Pro out on the water for the first time was learning how well it glides and tracks for a budget board. The board, at 32” wide, is narrow enough to get some good momentum, even with the slightly rounded nose of the board.

What helps the glide and tracking more than anything is the triple fin design.

The three fins keep this board balanced and moving at a swift pace. This translates well when turning the iSUP into a kayak. While this board does not move nearly as smoothly or gracefully as a well-built kayak, it does move nicely through the water after just a few strokes.

Maneuverability And Turning Ability

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Turns
Turns are wide and a bit challenging when paddling on the Defender Pro

Some of the biggest downsides to this board reside in its maneuverability and turning ability. In short, this board is not the best at turning. It turns exceptionally wide. In most cases, you can just do a quick reverse correction, but this will result in you losing momentum.

There is always a give and take when constructing a board, and where this board excels in glide and tracking, it simply must sacrifice some of its turning and navigation abilities. Since it was easy to correct the direction with a reverse stroke, and because it felt great on the water, this turning issue didn’t feel like a big issue on the water.

Stability And Rigidity

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Stability
The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro has great buoyancy and solid stability

This board has a great buoyancy. Where some boards are mostly under the water, this board stays several inches above the water line, even with heavier passengers. This buoyancy is likely another contributor to the solid glide this board has. It also makes for a nice dry deck pad when you use the Defender Pro as a kayak.

There is a solid and rigid feel to this board when you are on it. It doesn’t bend much in the middle, and there is no “taco effect” even after a longer ride. This rigidity is likely due to these “military grade” materials and is impressive for a board at this $300 to $400 price point.

How The TIGERXBANG Holds Up In Various Conditions

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Calm Waters
The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro is perfect in calm waters, and even a bit of chop

The Defender Pro from TIGERXBANG is designed for various paddling purposes. It is a fun recreation board at its core, but it can potentially be used as a touring board (at least in very calm waters), and of course, kayaking. On flat waters, this board holds up in all these categories. It is lots of fun on flat water, and the maneuverability issues don’t really matter when there is no chop. The glide and tracking make it possible to take this board a bit further than a lower-priced budget iSUP.

This board can handle a little bit of chop. This is mostly thanks to its sturdy build, buoyancy, and rigidity. Still, this is not a touring board designed to take too far out in the chop. It is possible, but you really should consider a longer board with a touring shape for those types of adventures.

Notable Features Included In The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro

Double-Blade 4-Piece Adjustable Paddle

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Paddles
The Four-piece paddle is included with the purchase

The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro comes with a 3-piece adjustable paddle, and an additional paddle to turn it into a kayak paddle. The paddle is easy to assemble, both have a SUP paddle and a kayak paddle.

In general, the paddle works well. It isn’t heavy, it’s easy to assemble, and it serves its purpose. The only issue is it doesn’t have much of an angle, mostly because it is a compromise between a SUP and kayak paddle face. So this means your strokes are slightly compromised. But since this is not a racing board and more a pleasure craft, it isn’t a major issue. There are, however, better SUP paddles to choose from for those looking to maximize each stroke.

The clasp that clasps the paddle in the right placement loosened up after just two uses and needed to be tightened using a screwdriver. After this tightening, it was much more secure.

Built-in Paddle Holder

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Paddle Holder
The built-in paddle holder is a great new feature

There are two pieces of velcro along the side of the board that can store your paddle when you aren’t using it. This is great for those who do SUP yoga, or like to leave their board anchored while they swim or snorkel. It also comes in very handy when carrying the board outside the water. The velcro is strong and it is overall a great little additional feature.

Soft Decking

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Soft Decking

The Defender Pro iSUP comes with three different sections of soft decking. The decking looks great, matching the color of the board (whichever color you choose). It serves its purpose in comfort and is fairly anti-slip. It would be nice to have a little bit more grip, but the good news it is super comfortable for those longer paddles or for a yoga session.

Three Carrying Handles

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Carrying Handles

TIGERXBANG included a total of three carrying handles on the Defender Pro. There is one handle located in the center of the board, making it easy to carry under your arms. There are also two additional handles – one located on the nose or the board, and the other by the tail.

Having these additional handles makes it easy to have two people carry this board. It also makes pulling this board out of trickier waters much easier. All three of these handles are easy to grip, and lightly padded, making it easier to carry the board longer distances.

Daisy-Chained Bungee Storage

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Nose Storage
Storage is included near the nose of the board

The board also comes with daisy-chained bungees for storage towards the nose of the board. This included storage is a definite perk. The provided bungees make it possible to easily stash your dry bag or a cooler bag and some essentials on a longer journey.

While the space is ample, the bungees are not the best. They work fine, but they do not have the strong elasticity you would hope for in iSUP bungees. The good news is this board is very affordable, and you can easily replace these bungees on your own if they aren’t performing to your standards.

Kayak Seat

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Kayak Seat
The kayak seat is included in the purchase of the Defender Pro

One of the best features of the TIGERXBANG Defender Pro is that it easily doubles as a kayak. Unlike some hybrid iSUP/kayaks, TIGERXBANG includes the kayak seat with the iSUP bundle, which means you don’t need to fork out an additional $50 or more for a seat.

The seat is very easy to clip in and is made of soft and cushioned materials. It also has adjustable straps making it possible to change the angle of the seat. This means you don’t need to sit at a 90-degree angle like you do on some hybrid boards.

This seat is bound to get wet, and it does take a bit of time to dry. But otherwise, it is a great, user-friendly, and practical seat. It also fits nicely into the carrying backpack, so you can essentially carry an iSUP and kayak on your back.

Carrying Backpack And Packing Strap

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Carrying Backpack

The TIGERXBANG iSUP comes with a new and improved carrying backpack. This backpack is a great size, as it can fit all the equipment – from the 4-piece paddle, hand pump, kayak accessories, the board itself, and there is still extra room. This makes packing everything up quick and stress-free.

The pack has cushioned shoulder straps, cushioned backing, and even a waist belt. This helps take pressure off your shoulders and upper back when carrying this iSUP longer distance.

One-Click Removable Fins (3)

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Removable Fins
The one-click fins on this board are easy to use and well-designed

One of the best features included with the TIGERXBANG Defender Pro is the three one-click removable fins. Most iSUPs use click-in fins these days, as this makes packing and unpacking the board much easier. With some brands, fins are a pain to insert and remove, but not with this board.

These fins are very simple, sturdy, and truly just one click. They are just as easy to remove as they are to insert. This eliminates any potential for damaging this part of the board or the fins, and it also makes inflating the board all the more speedy.

Coiled Ankle Leash

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Ankle Leash
The coiled ankle leash that is included works well

The board also comes equipped with a coiled ankle leash. The leash is comfortable, and the velcro holds up. Coiling leashes are always great to have since they don’t cause the drag that other leashes do. This leash serves its purpose, and is a great inclusion, especially for those who are purchasing their first iSUP – it is one less thing you need to buy.

Repair Kit

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Repair Kit

The board comes with a simple repair kit as well. It is mostly just a few pieces of military-grade PVC, which is meant to help you patch up the board if you run into anything sharp. It is a nice touch, but you need to buy your own glue. This kit fits in the carrying case easily.

Hand Pump

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Hand Pump
A hand pump is included in this iSUP package

The board also comes with a hand pump. The hand pump has a built-in PSI gauge, and if you pump fairly fast you can fill the board up in about 6 minutes. The hand pump is fairly slender and fits comfortably in the carrying bag. As the board gets above 7 PSI, however, the pumping does get much slower and significantly more challenging – so it might be worth considering a motorized pump as well (especially if you have more than one board to fill regularly).

Motorized Pump (Not Included)

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Motorized Pump
The motorized pump (sold separately), is an add-on worth considering

There is the option to purchase a motorized pump as an add-on to this board. Sure, the board comes complete with a manual pump, but it can be a little tiresome if you need to blow up more than one board, and quickly.

The TIGERXBANG 20PSI High Pressure 12V Electric Pump plugs into any 12V DC car connector, which is great for anyone who drives to their paddling destination of choice. There are six different nozzles, which means this pump works on most types of iSUPs out there, not just TIGERXBANG. It also has an LCD screen that shows you the PSI as it climbs.

There is also an auto-off feature so you don’t pump the board up too much, and it can also help you deflate the board. At $90, it is not the cheapest add-on, but it is worth considering if you paddle with an iSUP all the time, or paddle with a group, as this can save you time and energy that you could otherwise use on the water.

Packing Up And Transporting The TIGERXBANG iSUP

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Packing Up

Sometimes packing up and transporting an iSUP can be a pain, but the Defender Pro is a breeze to both transport and pack away. In regards to packing up the board, there is a simple air release valve. When you need to roll it, there is no need to fold it in half, just slowly roll the board up to ensure all air escapes. Then you can use the included strap to tie the rolled-up board. It will easily fit in the provided backpack with all the accessories.

The cushioned backpack with the padded waistbelt makes it easy to carry this board longer distances without causing pain or discomfort. Overall, this is an easy and comfortable board to pack up and carry around.

Notes On How The TIGERXBANG iSUP Performs As A Kayak

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Performance
This iSUP and kayak hybrid is a solid deal at $400

The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro comes equipped with everything you need to turn it into a sit-on-top kayak. Not only does the board come with everything you need, but it also functions surprisingly well as a kayak.

First, there is the equipment to consider. The seat is padded, and comfortable enough to sit on for an extended period. Thanks to the design, you can also adjust the angle of the back support, which is a plus. The only downside to this is if you lean too hard, you might cause the seat to angle down a bit.

The paddle also works well. The angle of the paddle is a compromise, so it is not a perfect SUP paddle or kayak paddle, but it works satisfactorily as both. All in all, you don’t feel held back at all by the paddle, and it is light. Some gripping would be great, but if you have some kayaking gloves, those work just as well.

The board has a great glide and tracking as a kayak. You can move fairly fast on calm waters. In choppy waters, it is a bit harder to get a nice glide, but if you are taking it out somewhere placid then you can move nicely in it. Overall, using this board as a kayak is easy, fun, and worthwhile.

Is The Defender Pro iSUP From TIGERXBANG Worth The Price?

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Kayak Hybrid
This iSUP and kayak hybrid is a solid deal at $400

The Defender Pro iSUP from TIGERXBANG costs $399, but you can often find it discounted to about $350, or lower. This puts it on the slightly higher end of a budget board. At this price point, the board more than delivers. This is mostly because it has materials and a design far superior to other budget boards.

The board performs well on the water, and it is great for a variety of paddling circumstances, which is what you hope for, but don’t always get at a modest price iSUP. Some elements show its low cost, including less-than-perfect bungees, and a paddle that works just fine but does not excel.

Sure, this board doesn’t have it all, like amazing turning or an action mount as you would expect from a high-end board. But with this board being under $400, and being a quality kayak hybrid makes this a good deal. It rides well as a kayak and iSUP, making each stroke feel like money well spent.

Final Recommendation For The TIGERXBANG Defender Pro iSUP

Tigerxbang Defender Pro 10 6 Isup Versatile
The Defender Pro from TIGERXBANG is a versatile board at a good price

The TIGERXBAND Defender Pro might not be a perfect board, but it is a high-quality and wildly versatile iSUP worth considering. This board comes fully loaded, from an ankle leash to everything you need to turn the iSUP into a fully functional kayak.

This full kit and versatility make it a great beginner paddle board option for those looking for an iSUP that can rise to all sorts of potential occasions. Where this board excels is in its glide, tracking, and ease of use. It is easy to set up with the one-click fins, and simple-to-install kayak seat.

Where this board struggles a bit is in its maneuverability and turning. The turns are very wide, and it can be difficult to change course when the board is moving. The paddle included is also less than ideal.

But for less than $400 you should not expect perfection from an iSUP. Instead, what you get with the TIGERXBANG Defender Pro is a solid and complete package. Its carrying case, hardware, and design were all carefully thought out and well-executed. This board provides a smooth ride and it and fun for most occasions. It is as sturdy as any other board for this price point. Add the fact that this board turns into a kayak, and you have yourself a good deal that is hard to walk away from.
